Deep within the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his flock of rams.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
However, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played here a joke on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. But, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
